Setting the Perfect Sag: A Guide to Optimizing Bicycle Suspension

Calculating the sag (amount of compression) of a bicycle suspension is an important step in properly setting up the suspension for a specific discipline.

For cross country riding, a general guideline is to set the sag at around 15-25% of the total suspension travel. This allows for efficient pedaling and good small bump compliance.

For trail riding, a sag setting of 25-30% is a good starting point. This provides a balance of pedaling efficiency and good handling in technical terrain.

For enduro or downhill riding, a sag setting of 30-35% is recommended. This allows for maximum absorption of big hits and improved stability in rough terrain.

To measure sag, start by setting the suspension to the recommended pressure or damping for your weight. Sit on the bike in a normal riding position and have a friend measure the distance between a fixed point on the suspension and the same point on the bike while you are seated. Then, stand up and compress the suspension by pushing down on the handlebars and have your friend measure the distance again. The difference between the two measurements is the sag.

It's important to note that these are general guidelines and your personal preferences, riding style, and the specific bike and suspension setup can also affect the ideal sag setting. It is recommended to experiment with different sag settings and find what works best for you.

High speed regulation refers to how the suspension reacts to bigger impacts and high-speed bumps, such as big rocks or jumps. Low speed regulation refers to how the suspension reacts to small bumps and pedaling inputs, such as roots or small rocks.

To set up the high-speed regulation, you will need to adjust the compression damping. Compression damping controls how fast the suspension compresses during a high-speed impact. If the compression damping is set too low, the suspension will compress too quickly and can cause the bike to bottom out. If the compression damping is set too high, the suspension will not compress enough and can cause the bike to feel harsh and unforgiving.

On the other hand, low speed regulation is controlled by the rebound damping. Rebound damping controls how fast the suspension extends after a high-speed impact. The video features none other than Brendan Howey, a Canadian rider who's been tearing up the trails for almost 15 years now. In celebration of his 30th birthday, Howey treated himself to some epic freeride lines and a fast and flowy trail, all captured on camera by the talented team of Rupert Walker, Clay Porter, and Calvin Huth.

The video is called "HWY 30," named after a piece of trail Howey built by hand for the coast segment of the video. It's wide like a highway and fittingly, he was 30 years old when he built it. In an interview, Howey said, "For me, this project was like a bucket list project. I feel super lucky to have worked on another video with Rupert, and then to get Calvin and Clay on it as well was the icing on the cake. I can't thank them enough for working on this little (big) project."
